Anointing of the Sick

Jesus gave the apostles and their successors the authority to forgive sins and heal the sick.  That is what priests (and bishops) do in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

How are people healed through the Anointing of the Sick?
The priest has the authority to administer the sacrament but it is God’s decision how He distributes that power.  Only those ordained as priests can administer the Anointing of the Sick because it includes spiritual healing, the forgiveness of sins.  Thus, deacons cannot perform the sacrament.  People can be cured mentally, physically, or spiritually.

Who can be Anointed?
Those will mental illness:  severe depression, schizophrenia,…
Those will physical ailments: going into surgery, diabetes, a coma patient,…
Those in danger of dying of old age.  The age of 65 or older is a common designation.

Is Last Rites different than the Anointing of the Sick?
No, because it is the same sacrament.  However, the prayers are a bit different due to circumstances.

If you or a loved one is in need of anointing, please contact the parish office.
